Summer Camp
Edgar, 12, and Miriam, 11, have witnessed severe domestic
violence in their home and saw their father barred from the
home. The situation has placed a heavy burden on the children,
and their caseworker says they need a safe place where they
can just be kids during the summer. Through HALOS’ Summer
Camp program, we provide funds to make sure children like
Edgar and Miriam can enjoy their summer break and that their
caregivers can rest assured that they are safe during the
work day.
Summer is an especially difficult time for the caregivers
of abused and neglected children. With no school, it can
be a challenge to find a safe, affordable place for the children
to stay during the work day.
And summer can be a dangerous time for the children. Without
the structure of a regular school day, there are many opportunities
for children to who are already at risk to start down the
wrong path.
HALOS works to address this problem through our Summer Camp
program. Generous donors in Charleston County can sponsor
children to participate in one of the area’s many summer
camps. The arrangement keeps the children out of trouble
and gives them a safe, constructive environment to learn
and develop friendships. And this resource is absolutely
essential for caregivers who must work but can’t afford
the high cost of day care.
Summer is also a time when kids should be kids, and the
HALOS Summer Camp program provides this opportunity to the
children in the community who need it the most. |
