HOW WE SUPPORT KINSHIP CARE

At HALOS, our primary goal is to provide resources and special opportunities to abused and neglected children and their kinship caregivers. One of the primary ways we achieve this goal is through four annual programs that offer positive experiences for these children. Whether it’s providing a gift to a child during the holidays or ensuring children have a safe place to spend the day during summer break, we strive to improve and enrich the lives of abused and neglected children.

You can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of children in your community by sponsoring a child's participation in one or more of our programs. See first-hand the difference you can make in the life of a child by getting involved today!

OUR PROGRAMS

BACK TO SCHOOL

August can be an especially trying month for kinship caregivers. As the school year begins, the HALOS Back-to-School Program partners with community organizations and individuals to collect and donate backpacks, school supplies, and uniforms to ensure that each child begins the school year ready to learn. In 2016, 839 kinship children received back-to-school assistance through HALOS.

The 2017 Back-to-School drive is well underway! School supply and backpack drop offs can be made on August 7 and 8 at the DSS "Annex" (2036 Cherokee St., North Charleston, SC 29405).

Questions or need directions? Call NyRe Taylor, Resource Coordinator, at (803) 402-2089 or Family Advocate Andrea Thames at (843) 270-8538.

A huge THANK YOU to all who donated uniforms, book bags, and school supplies to help kinship children start the school year off prepared and ready to learn!

SUMMER CAMPS

It is beneficial for children who have experienced abuse and neglect to attend summer camp--these summer enrichment opportunities improve the overall well-being of not just the child, but the entire family. In addition, many kinship caregivers work full-time jobs; therefore, caregiver respite during the summer months is an essential component of the Summer Camp Program. HALOS facilitates summer camp opportunities by providing summer camp tuition scholarships to children in kinship care. Children who participate in the Summer Camp Program develop social skills, self-confidence, and leadership abilities.

Thanks to our generous donors, more than 145 children attended summer camp in 2017 with the aid of a HALOS summer camp scholarship!
