HOW WE SUPPORT CHILDREN IN KINSHIP CARE

Kinship families face unique challenges. Here's what your support makes possible:

1. Kinship caregivers tend to be poorer, older, and less-educated than traditional or foster parents. HALOS keeps children from being trapped in a cycle of poverty through links to financial assistance for food and health care.

2. Some children can’t enroll in school or receive medical treatment because their caregivers aren’t their legal guardians. HALOS connects families to the legal help they need to establish legal guardianship.

3. Children are scared when they’re taken from their homes. Caregivers may have difficulty coping with daunting new responsibilities. HALOS stops these problems from becoming a crisis through support groups and links to professional care.

4. For those families that qualify, HALOS has launched a program that provides 12-18 months of enhanced case management with a Success Coach. This program allows the Success Coach to work through risk factors with the children and caregivers to create action plans that provide them with necessary tools to be successful.

In addition, we strive to improve and enrich the lives of abused and neglected children by providing donated school supplies, holiday gifts, summer camp scholarships and critical goods.

OUR DRIVES

BACK TO SCHOOL

HALOS collects donated backpacks, school supplies and uniforms to ensure that each child begins the school year ready to learn. In 2018, more than 1,000 children received back-to-school assistance through HALOS!

SUMMER CAMPS

Many kinship caregivers work full-time. The children in their care need a safe and engaging summer activity while their caregivers are at work. HALOS facilitates summer camp opportunities by providing summer camp tuition scholarships of up to $300 per child. Thanks to generous donors, 161 children attended summer camp in 2018 with the aid of a HALOS summer camp scholarship!

CRITICAL GOODS

Relatives often receive an emergency call to take a child immediately in order to avoid foster care placement. Because their own children are grown, they don't have car seats, cribs or beds for the children. Without those critical goods, they are unable to take the child. HALOS provides these items necessary to ensure the child's safety. In 2017, 352 children received critical goods assistance.

HOLIDAY GIFTS

During the holiday season, many kinship caregivers experience heightened stress as they struggle to provide for their family. HALOS partners with community organizations and individuals to bring the joy and happiness of the holiday season to children with an open case of abuse or neglect by providing them with holiday gifts. In 2017, 2,667 children received gifts through the HALOS Holiday Giving Drive.
