Kinship Care
“It helped so much to learn that there are other people
going through the same things as me.” – Miss
Addie, who raises three grandchildren and attends the Kinship
Care support group.
Many children in our community live with relatives as their
primary caregivers so that the children can avoid foster
care. These generous caregivers are often the best alternative
to the parents for the children, and at HALOS, we strive
to help these caregivers with the heavy burden of raising
these children.
One of our primary efforts to assist caregivers is the Kinship
Care Resource & Support Program. Through this program,
we organize a monthly gathering where caregivers can participate
in support groups with other men and women who have welcomed
abused and neglected children into their homes. This support
group offers crucial moral support to caregivers and helps
them to cope with the difficulties of raising children who
are not their own.
To provide dinner and child care at the gatherings, HALOS
relies on volunteers. If you would like to share a favorite
recipe or spend hands-on time with children, we need volunteers
to prepare meals and work with children. Without volunteers,
this event could not happen. All it takes is one night a
month for you to help a family in need. To volunteer in the
Kinship Care program, contact us at 953-9539. |
